Cast Gold Fillings

Cast gold fillings are a mixture of gold with other metals such as silver and copper. These other metals make gold fillings more durable. Cast gold fillings are stronger than amalgam, doesn’t corrode, can withstand chewing forces and can last at least 10 to 15 years or even longer. In terms of aesthetics, some people find cast gold fillings to be more pleasing than silver. The downside of cast gold fillings is its cost. Gold being a precious metal costs as much as 10 times the cost of an amalgam. Though a rare occurrence, cast gold fillings are not advised to be placed next to silver or amalgam to avoid any possible occurrence of galvanic shock. Another thing is that the interaction between these metals and saliva can generate minimal electric current that can cause a feeling of sharp pain in your mouth.
